Paralegal Work From Home Opportunities

Doing paralegal work from home can be a great way to earn a living, but it is not always easy to find opportunities. In this article we consider how you can improve your chances of finding paralegal work that you can do from home.

Just about all law firms employ paralegals to assist attorneys in research and preparation of cases. They can also be employed by government and large corporations.

A paralegal (also known as a legal assistant) is somebody who does legal work but is not a qualified attorney. There are certain things that paralegals are not allowed to do, such as representing clients in court. Nevertheless it can be very interesting work and most legal assistants enjoy their jobs.

If you do not have any experience in legal work, it can be a good idea to start by taking a college course. You do not need to be qualified to do this work and many firms take on inexperienced college graduates or promote intelligent legal secretaries and then train them. Nevertheless, a certificate will give you an advantage in the job market.

If you do not already have a college degree, the best route is to take a paralegal studies program leading to an associate degree. You can do this at many community colleges. If you do already have a college degree in another subject, you can simply take a certificate in paralegal studies. In some cases this can be completed in just a few months.

Most paralegals are office based, and even if you work from home you are likely to have to visit the office often. This is because the case files and other documents will normally be stored there. You will probably also have to use law libraries from time to time. However, as more and more information becomes available on the internet, it is becoming easier for people to do paralegal work from home.

Some law firms do not like to employ home workers because of the security risk of letting confidential files leave the office. Getting around this problem can be a challenge, but you may be able to find work that can be done mainly online. Many firms now hold a lot of information on computers, and your home computer can be linked to the office network so that you can access their files remotely.

Most organizations are much more flexible in their attitude to working from home when they already know you and your work. You may have to be prepared to work in the office at first, and then ask about working more flexibly later when you are known and appreciated in the firm.

From the organization's point of view, there are many advantages to hiring home workers that they may not have considered. These include lower overheads and the fact that they do not have to find you a desk, parking space etc. So when you are asking about paralegal work from home opportunities, always point out these benefits to the firm.
